Monthly Musings: September

What a month! I climbed a mountain in torrential rain, started university and reached the ripe old age of 25. I bought my first ever pair of 'sensible shoes' and even set myself a budget. I know, I know, who am I and what have I done with the real Aimee?

And now summer (or the weird rainy haze we in the UK are forced to refer to as summer) is suddenly over and we're into Autumn. That happened really fast, right? But here's a recap of my September and all the weird and wonderful things I got up to.

Magical Moment

This month I turned (gasp!) 25! How terrifying is that? I'm officially closer to 30 than I am to 20 now. Eww.
In the weeks leading up to my birthday my quarter life crisis went into overdrive. I was plagued by Facebook photos from people I went to school with, smiling into the camera with their babies/engagement rings/houses. They all seemed to have "I have a pension plan" written all over their faces. When did everyone become so grown up?
But, loathed as I was to face up to being another year older, I really enjoyed my birthday. For the first time in my life I didn't have a party. Instead my niece and nephew descended and we stuffed our faces with pizza and Disney princess birthday cake (because I'll never be a real grown up) and watched Top Gear (because even on my birthday, I still don't get control of the TV). It was low-key and chilled, but it was lovely.

#FAIL of the Month

Either my house is haunted and some kind of mischievous spirit is taunting with me or I'm losing my mind. Either way, I'd call it a fail.

At first it was a bump in the night here, a creepy cupboard door opening by itself there, but it was when I decided to make a video about those creepy goings on that things got really weird. When I was editing the video, I noticed some noises that I'd never come across before. It sounds like something brushing against the microphone of my camera. I'm not into the whole paranormal thing and I'm not one to jump to any kind of ghostly conclusion, but when I heard those sounds...yeah, that freaked me out.

This month I'm obsessed with...

Pretty much everything Autumn related. The plaid skirts are out in full force as are the ankle boots and knitwear. And then there are the lipsticks! Crimson, plum, burgundy...yes please!

My favourite Autumn lip product has been released from the confines of my lipstick drawer and I've fallen in love with it all over again. It's none other than Revlon's Just Bitten Kissable Balm Stain in Crush. Oooh it's beautiful!

Book

It was a hugely productive month in terms of getting through my reading list (I had to make up for the fact that I spent a solid two months wading through The Count of Monte Cristo). I read three books from the BBC's Big Read List, but my favourite was *Anne of Green Gables.

If, like me, you've somehow gone through your whole life without coming across this book, it's about an orphan named Anne who is (accidentally) adopted by a brother and sister and grows up on their quaint little farm, Green Gables. Anne's a bit of an oddball (which is probably why I took such a liking to her) and gets into all sorts of mischief. Think Brer Rabbit, but in Canada...and without the tail. It's a children's book, but it's beautifully written and it has that good old-fashioned wholesomeness about it that makes you want to don a shawl and say things like, "How do you do Mr. Baker?"
PS. I cried at the end and I'm not even ashamed.

A new Halloween shop appeared in town this month so naturally my niece and I stood outside for 15 minutes taking ridiculous pictures. "Aimee," She said. "I want to be that creepy rabbit for Halloween." When all the other seven year old girls are picking out princess costumes, I'm proud that my niece is as mental as I am.

Youtuber of the month...

Technically Kendall Rae is Youtuber of every month. I've been watching her channel for more years than I care to count and I have no doubt she's already featured as my Youtuber of the month in one of my previous Monthly Musings posts.

But she's back this month because of a video she put out in response to the hateful and downright ignorant comments she received on her Halloween Lookbook video. Some critiqued her for showing too much skin, others bashed her for not showing enough. She was accused of being too slutty, too modest, too fat, of not being a good role model. But the way she sticks up for herself and condemns her critics for falling into the age old trap of judging a woman based entirely on her physicality and outfit choice suggests to me that she's kick-ass role model for 21st century women.

And now, bring on October!
